Liverpool Under-23s manager Michael Beale leaves club following Steven Gerrard’s return

Michael Beale has left his role as the manager of Liverpool’s Under-23s with immediate effect.

The announcement comes just days after it was revealed that former Reds skipper Steven Gerrard will be returning to Anfield in a coaching capacity.

It is not yet known whether Gerrard will replace Beale as the U23 boss, although the 36-year-old is unlikely to be handed such a senior position within the club’s academy at this stage of his coaching career.

Beale, who is heading to South America to become the assistant manager at Sao Paulo, joined Liverpool in September 2012.

He initially worked with the Reds’ U15s and U16s but became U23 boss in August 2014.

Academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: “Over the last four years I have seen Michael help coach a variety of players across differing age groups. He is a talented coach who has great potential to go on and make his mark within the senior game.

“I believe that Michael has been integral to the development of many of our players who have progressed towards the first team and I would like to wish him and his family every success for the future.”
