Tragic: Flood kills 60-year-old woman in Zamfara

An unidentified 60-year-old woman has been killed by flood in Gummi local government area of Zamfara state on Thursday, September 16.

Confirming the incident, the council’s vice chairman, Alhaji Sa’idu Bawa, explained that the sad incident occurred because of persistent downpour in the area.

According to Daily Trust, Bawa said household materials, food items and animals were also lost to the disaster.

He said: “Over 500 people were rendered homeless and were now living with their family members. Apart from the disaster here in Gummi, we received similar report of the flood disaster in Gayari district and are going to visit the area after the assessment.

“We would compile all the list of the victims after which the local government would give its support to the victim. Also, a request for the assistance would also be forwarded to both state and Federal Government on the disaster.”

The councilor representing Rafi ward in Gummi district, Malam Sani Usamatu described the incident as an unfortunate one, adding that the areas mostly affected by the flood in Gummi town were Albarkawa, Yardiga, Yartsayasu and Lemawa.

He noted that most of the victims of the disasters were women and children.

One man simply identified as Malam Bala Muhammad, who spoke on behalf of all the victims of the disaster, appealed to the government at all levels to provide emergency assistance for them.

According to reports by Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Gummi is one of the eight local government areas of the state predicted to witness flooding this year.

A similar incident where the body of an elderly man identified as Ebenezer Olabode, was swept away by flood on Tuesday, September 13. The body floated on the bank of River Okooko in Oke Oniti area of Osun state.

The man, 60, was said to be returning home when he ran into the flooded street not quite far from his  residence.
