Missing 15-Year-Old Texas Girl Found Under Sink in Abandoned Apartment

The body of a missing 15-year-old girl has been recovered from an abandoned apartment building in South Houston, Texas, – and a 15-year-old boy stands accused of her murder, PEOPLE has learned.
According to Texas EquuSearch, a group of trained volunteers that travel the nation to assist in missing persons cases, the remains of Karen Perez were found Monday night, concealed beneath a sink in a deserted residential complex.
A police spokesman tells PEOPLE that a teenage boy has been detained in connection with Perez's slaying, but investigators are not releasing the his name because he is a juvenile.
The teen suspect has been charged with a single count of murder, according to the police spokesman.
Perez went missing May 27 after leaving South Houston High School with her ex-boyfriend and another male, the spokesman explains.
That school is located directly across the street from the the abandoned complex where Texas EquuSearch volunteers discovered her corpse late Monday.
Perez can be seen in surveillance video walking into a store with the two males, police note. They would not comment on whether either of the two men in the video was the 15-year-old who is charged with Perez's murder.
Police refused to discuss the suspect in any detail.
The accused teen is expected to appear in court Wednesday for his arraignment.
